It’s Like the X-Games of Letterpress

July 13, 2008 · 3 Comments

The School of Visual Concepts’ 7th Annual Wayzgoose, celebrating the time-honored art of letterpress printing, will reappear Saturday, August 23 from 1 to 6 pm at SVC’s Seattle location.

For those who aren’t familiar with a Wayzgoose, it’s a tradition in the letterpress world that dates back to the 17th Century, when printers would serve a feast to their staff in recognition of the impending shorter days of fall and winter which would require the difficult work of handsetting type by candlelight.

At the SVC Wayzgoose, there will be neither geese nor candles, but some interesting new wrinkles are being added this year:

Steamroller Letterpress Smackdown: Local design firms will be challenged to produce a poster which will then be printed in the SVC parking lot with a two-ton steamroller used in place of the traditional printing press. (See one in action here.)

Northwest Invitational Letterpress Show: Letterpress Printing from some of the top designers and letterpress shops in the area will be exhibited in the SVC Gallery.

Letterpress Marketplace: Artists will be on hand selling letterpress posters, broadsides, cards, books, and other ephemera and promoting their studios.

Equipment Swap: Printers will bring type, cuts, tools, printing accessories, and who-knows-what for selling, buying, or simply admiring.

Shop Tours and Printing Demonstrations: SVC’s letterpress shop will be open for tours. Guests will get a chance to print their letterpress keepsake on SVC’s recently restored iron handpress.

We’ll also have food and drink available for this family-friendly event, which is co-presented by:
